Functional Bodywork: depth and subtlety, together.
A global way of working that combines manual therapy, myofascial work, visceral manipulation, and craniosacral therapy — because the systems of the body are interconnected, and the treatment plan is already there, waiting to be read.
The treatment plan is in each individual body — not in a formula.
So much training hands you a protocol: this condition, that sequence of techniques, a standard deep-tissue routine. But bodies don’t read the protocol. The origin of a restriction often lives in a system far from where the pain shows up.
My work is the opposite of formulaic. We learn to perceive the whole and the particular at once — to let the tissue speak, follow it to the system that holds the root, and work from there. This is harder than memorizing a routine. It is also the only thing I’ve found that consistently works.
The practitioner’s stance
- Partner with the client — not an expert applying a standard protocol.
- Read the body's language before deciding anything.
- Understand your own story; you cannot do this work without it.
- Hold the whole and the particular in the same moment.
Distinct modalities, woven into a single way of working.
Structural & manual therapy
The organizing principle that the body is a whole, structured system — drawn from years of structural integration and neuromuscular work.
Myofascial work
Meeting the connective web that links every system — releasing the patterns that hold restriction far from where the symptom appears.
Visceral manipulation
The organs, their motility, and their relationships. Often the root of a problem lives in a system no one thought to listen to.
Craniosacral therapy
Both structural and biodynamic — the tide of the body, the cranial rhythm, and the intelligence at work beneath our hands.
Depth that goes beyond most curricula.
Over nearly forty years, certain territories have become where I go deepest — the places practitioners most often tell me their first training never reached.
- Organ work & visceral relationships
- Bone work & structural integrity
- Birth trauma & pediatrics
- Pregnancy & the pelvic floor
- The autonomic nervous system & trauma-informed care
- Concussion, TMJ & the cranial base
“The marriage of true bodywork at a high level with an understanding of the intelligence at work within us — and our connection to all things.”Leigh Ankrum
This is what I teach — in full.
The complete method lives inside the Ankrum Institute’s certification and, soon, an online body of work.
